WTF Wednesday: Good Stalking and Baaaaad Stalking

CONTEST INFO: The Alliterative Allomorph: Are you a writer? Then you MUST enter THE WRITING SHOW CONTEST! (Repost):

Admit it, you writer people... you stalk agents or publishers, or whomever you are querying. You creep on their blogs, stake out their QT (QueryTracker) pages, hang out on their agency website (like anything's gonna change, psh), have a direct feed to their Twitter pages.

I don't Twitter, but I do the other three things. I even stalk my own EMAIL... for rejection letters. It's sad. But then I'm shocked when I get a request. It's like "wow, there's a chance... slim, but it's there."

It's invigorating to get a REQUEST then go over every detail of the agent before sending it off. Even after you stalk all their pages again to make sure you did it right or how long it will take them to review your work. And it's DISTRACTING.

I know I have trouble working on my WIPs when I have partials or fulls out. Even though you're supposed to work on a new project while you're querying the other project, it's difficult when you put your SOUL into the one you're querying.

Like waiting for judgement! That pee-your-pants type of feeling. So we stalk our agents/publisher because it makes us feel better. Like a pacifier when you're a baby.

And I don't know what's up with the picture. I typed "agent stalking" into Google and this was one of the results. It made me laugh. So I included it. Someone totally photoshopped that guy with the glasses though... We'll just say that glasses guy is an agent and naked coat hanger guy is a BAAAAD STALKER example.

  1. I do stalk. And hover. And creep. But in a totally non-scary way (I hope)...

  2. I haven't reached the stalking stage yet...but soon....very very soon! :)

  3. As a writer with limited ability, I prefer just watching the stalking from other better writers--it can be entertaining to say the least.

  4. I haven't even reached the querying stage and I am already stalking. It's almost a religion I am so devout about it all. Sigh. I can't fathom how utterly awful I will be when I get to this stage. There may be restraining orders in my future...

  5. You should Twitter more! I tweet favorite quotes, maybe something funny that happened, random tidbits, and comment on what my fellow bloggers have tweeted! It's fun but distracting, haha.

I have an award for you at my blog today!!!

  6. Stalking? Is there such thing as BAD stalking? I stalk in a non-creepy way. There's a class you take to perfect it, let me know if you need some lessons and i'll be sure to hook you up!

  7. Ha ha! Great post. I am a non-threatening stalker - at least I hope so. Just ask James Dashner. LOL. :-)

Congrats on your award over at Laura's.

  8. I don't stalk anyone or anything...no time! *sigh*

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. :)
    Love,
    Lola

PS- I'm telling you this from a place of love: on your About You header, you have "never QUITE anything in my life". I believe you want that to read 'QUIT'. (sans 'E') Easy mistake. But since it's directed at agents, you might want to correct it. :)

    Lola--->out.

  9. You're scaring me. I'm not at the querying stage yet, but I have a thick O.C.D. streak that might get me in trouble;0)

  10. I (non-creepily) agent stalk, just so I get a good idea of who they are and what they're looking for. I suppose in most other professions this would be creepy, but it's beneficial if we know who we're querying instead of just sending emails/letters out blindly.

Any news on the agent that has your MS? :D

  11. I haven't reached the querying stage yet, but there are already several agents I have in mind that I do check out their blog, etc. So I'm sure once I do get to that stage, I'll be stalking with the best of them! Just hopefully in a non-creepy way. :)
