FEATURING YOU: Laura Marcella

Link This Post
Have you met Laura Marcella?
The coolest person in the world?
Who gave me my first blog award and always encourages her bloggy friends.
Check out her zebra-ific blog two blocks down from my flat, Wavy Lines
Arduous reader, avid writer, possibly goes commando, and the infamous Ebony Equine.

1) What do you do? (take it any way you want)
By day I’m a writer, blogger, wife, daughter, sister, and aunt. By night I shimmy into a head-to-toe skin-tight black-on-black-zebra-striped pleather suit to stir up a tornado of troubling thoughts in the wind and pluck sinister visions from the stars. I bring the kind of trouble writers desperately need to create sizzling tension and booming conflict. So the next time you get a deliciously wicked idea for your wip, you can thank the Ebony Equine (Not happy with the media for that embarrassing name). But shhh! My enemies–the close-minded and book challengers–are everywhere… (This is why Laura is a beast (awesome)!)
2) RANDOM FACT!
Though the tomato is considered a vegetable for cooking purposes, it’s actually a fruit because it has seeds. I don’t like tomatoes unless it’s on a hamburger with cheese and lettuce. I do like ketchup and tomato sauce though!
3) What are you working on currently?
A middle-grade novel! MG is the genre I’d like to establish myself first before I venture into other genres. I’m heading into the oh-so-dreaded middle, so I don’t want to say too much about it. I have this weird notion that if I talk about my projects before the first draft is done, then I won’t get any more ideas for it. Not sure why I think that. It’s kind of ridiculous, I know.
I’m also working on a flash fiction collection, but that’s just for fun! I like to write outside my comfort zone for practice. I don’t have any notions of publishing such a thing.
4) CRAZY FACT!
I had a head of yellow hair when I was little. As I got older, it turned a darker and darker blonde until it finally settled on light brown. And I’ve never dyed my hair! It’s still au naturel!
5) What is your ultimate goal/dream?
My ultimate dream is to own a food replicator (you know, like on Star Trek) so I don’t ever have to cook again. I realize that dream may never be realized in my lifetime. Therefore, my ultimate goal is to make enough money from my writing to hire a fabulous cook. (you are a genius!)
6) UBER COOL FACT!
I read somewhere that If you part your hair on the right side, you were born to be carnivorous. If you part it on the left, your physical and psychological make-up is that of a vegetarian. I part my hair in the middle sometimes, but I also part it on the right side. I like vegetables, but I love chicken. So this is true for me! Is it true for you? (RIGHT SIDE!)
7) What advice would you give to others interested in publishing?
STOCK YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE WITH HEAPS OF CHOCOLATE!!! You’re going to need it. And you should probably stick to a workout plan since you’ll be eating all that chocolate!
8) STRANGEST THING YOU’VE EVER EATEN!
Buffalo meat and frog legs. Frog legs are delicious (similar to chicken). But I do not like buffalo meat at all. Ick!
9) What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
For life: Laughter is the best medicine. For writing: Reading a lot will teach you what to do and what not to do. Writing a lot will put that lesson into practice.
10) BOXERS OR BRIEFS?
Neither! Oh, I just realized how that sounds. What I mean is, I like boxer briefs! ;) (Commando; the unwritten option Laura almost chose)
11) Who inspires you and why?
My blog buddies! You’re all determined to achieve your writing and publishing dreams. My blog buddies inspire me to keep it up, too, no matter how frustrating it can be sometimes.
12) RICH AND MISERABLE OR BROKE AND HAPPY?
This is a no-brainer: broke and happy of course. That’s pretty much my life right now anyway!
13) Describe a triumphant moment in your quest to publish?
Starting my blog! I haven’t had many successes, but connecting with other writers has been a beaming ray of sunshine.
14) SMELL LIKE FETA CHEESE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE OR WEAR A CHASTITY BELT UNTIL DEATH DO YOU PART?
My husband could remove that chastity belt easy peasy! (gahhh, darn your marital super powers Ebony Equine!)
15) What inspired you to seek publication? How did you get started? What made you begin writing?
I loved reading so much when I was a kid and couldn’t get enough of books, so I started writing my own stories. I’ve always been reading and writing. My senior year of high school I subscribed to Writer’s Digest magazine and that’s how I really began to learn and understand the publishing process. It wasn’t until college, though, that I started taking my writing seriously and submitting my stories.
16) A WORD YOU HAVE TROUBLE SPELLING FOR NO REASON? (come on, everyone has got one)
I’m a good speller, but “privilege” trips me up. I always want to put an “a” where the first “e” is.
17) Describe a low moment in your quest to publish and detail how you overcame it?
My first rejection. I cried a little. I got over it. Then I got my second rejection. I pouted a little. I got over it. Then I got my third rejection and bought up the entire chocolate stock in my grocery store. I got over it. And on and on and on…
18) YOU HAVE 7 WORDS TO SELL YOURSELF TO AN AGENT/PUBLISHER… GO!
I can’t imagine trying to approach an agent or publisher at this point. They’d laugh in my face and probably quit their jobs to avoid having to face me again in the future!
19) Why do you blog?
I started blogging to connect with other writers. So far it’s one of the best decisions I made on this writing journey!
20) WHAT DOES SHENANIGANS MEAN TO YOU?
FUN! Shenanigans always means there are wild times to be had! (oh yeah ;)

Do I even have to ask? I know you enjoyed Laura so visit her and become biffles (BFFLs) :) Wavy Lines

FEATURING YOU: Jen Daiker

Link This Post
Meet my friend Jen Daiker.
Basically she is da-bomb (awesome).
And she lives over yonder at Unedited
Blogger, sock enthusiast, super model, and possibly the cookie monster...

1) What do you do? (take it any way you want) J
I is a chick lit writer! I'm also known to do awesome jumping jacks and amazing chocolate chip cookies!
2) RANDOM FACT!
I wear stripped socks to bed. (Haha add "stripped" and "striped" to your annoying words to spell list... It's definitely on mine.)
3) What are you working on currently?
I'm querying 30 GUYS IN 30 DAYS and hoping to be agented. I'm also working on a new story titled GETTING OVER YOU about a woman whose recently divorced and forced into a new town with a rundown bed and breakfast and a group of divorcees.
4) CRAZY FACT!
I can't stand it when people lick their fingers. Gives me the heebie jeebies.
5) What is your ultimate goal / dream?
To write as a career and adopt children. (I'm with you on that!)
6) UBER COOL FACT!
I have a plush pirate, a stress ball burrito, and inspirational marbles at my desk (is that cool or strange... Guess you should decide). (Pretty sure that's the coolest fact yet!)
7) What advice would you give to others interested in publishing?
NEVER GIVE UP! LISTEN TO ALL ADVICE, THEN GO WITH YOUR GUT.
8) STRANGEST THING YOU’VE EVER EATEN!
I don't eat strange things... Ever. Unless you count soda flavored gummies... Now those are delicious!
9) What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Trust yourself for you know best.
10) BOXERS OR BRIEFS?
 Boxers... Holiday version. (HAHAHAHA)
11) Who inspires you and why?
Emily Giffin, Claire Cook, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. They tell you to be your own hero and write amazing novels!
12) RICH AND MISERABLE OR BROKE AND HAPPY?
The latter of the two (since I'm already there)!
13) Describe a triumphant moment in your quest to publish?
An offer of representation. Though it was amazing and taught me I was worthy it just wasn't the right moment. That's where going with your gut sucks... Though I'm happy I did decline. (That is very inspiring, you have to do what's right for yourself. I admire that.)
14) SMELL LIKE FETA CHEESE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE OR WEAR A CHASTITY BELT UNTIL DEATH DO YOU PART?
I suppose chastity belt, after all no one wants to be around someone who smells.
15) What inspired you to seek publication? How did you get started? What made you begin writing?
I started writing when I began blogging. Julie & Julia inspired me. I never knew what to do but wanted to try everything. The minute I put pen to paper I realized I could be anything whenever I wanted! Perfect profession. (That movie was very inspiring)
16) A WORD YOU HAVE TROUBLE SPELLING FOR NO REASON? (come on, everyone has got one)
Beautiful... I must spell it out every time (thank you Jim Carrey).
17) Describe a low moment in your quest to publish and detail how you overcame it?
Umm, I have several!! One day I'm up, the other day I'm down! It's a tough business, you have buddies to keep you strong.
18) YOU HAVE 7 WORDS TO SELL YOURSELF TO AN AGENT/PUBLISHER… GO!
*stares at computer screen* Awesome, cupcakes, cats, sparkles, guys, me, fabulous
*covers mouth* (Ok... I'd hire you)
19) Why do you blog?
Because I'm awesome at it (ahem, because I like it). (She speaks truth!!!!)
20) WHAT DOES SHENANIGANS MEAN TO YOU?
In which awesome people do crazy stuff while you giggle.
If you enjoyed reading about my friend Jen, please visit her (she always has cookies for guests) over at Unedited.

FEATURING YOU: Shelley Sly

Link This Post
Me-Shell my bell....
Meet Shelley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She runs this awesome blog, Stories in the ordinary and you may be wondering why she appears to be a shell..... I have no answers for this predicament.... Other than she is still an incredibly awesome person!
The Best Beta-Bud you'll ever have.  A teacher. A super hero. And can see the future. (ok now guess which ones are true)

1) What do you do? (take it any way you want)
I write (mostly middle grade novels, nonfiction, and song lyrics.)  I teach (assisting with kindergarten this year, taught 5th grade reading/math classes last year.)  In between those two things, I eat a lot. :)
2) RANDOM FACT!
I'm a concert freak.  In November I will be attending my 30th concert.  I keep all ticket stubs, I take pictures and videos, and I almost always try to meet the band after the show.  Some of the bands even started to recognize me after a while. ;)  But before you start thinking I'm cool... I like to wear ear-plugs during the show to save my hearing.  Like a geezer.
3) What are you working on currently?
A middle grade novel called "Out Of Hand," about a pair of nerdy best friends who unintentionally cause chaos for their sixth grade classmates
4) CRAZY FACT!
I have very vivid dreams.  Always have.  I've dreamed about the following things: Severus Snape, cereal boxes, spaghetti, hair salons, Neal & Peter from the TV show "White Collar", going back to college, airports, Nathan Fillion, CD collections, basements, the women from "Desperate Housewives", and kittens.
5) What is your ultimate goal / dream?
Ultimately... to live a wonderfully happy life with my family.  Hubby and I don't have children yet, but when we do, my goal is to be an amazing mother.  (I'd also love to be able to write novels for a living, but family happiness comes first.)
6) UBER COOL FACT!
You've heard of left brained versus right brained people?  I've taken multiple tests/indicators that all tell me I'm about 52% left brain and 48% right brain, which kind of rocks.  Most people I know are very much on one end of the spectrum; either they're "artsy/creative" right brain people or "science/logical" left brainers.  I'm right down the middle.
7) What advice would you give to others interested in publishing?
Read and research -- a ton!  Read books in your genre, outside your genre, read agent blogs and publishing blogs and books on writing the craft.  Connect with other writers, exchange manuscripts and learn from critiquing others.  If you write in a bubble with no desire to read others' works OR no desire to connect with fellow writers, your writing will reflect it.
8) STRANGEST THING YOU’VE EVER EATEN!
A Mexican-spice-flavored worm.  True story.  It was an experiment in a high school science class, and my teacher was really intimidating.  She wanted us to eat these (tiny, dead, fried) worms, and I didn't want to, but I was afraid of getting on her bad side, so I ate it.  It tasted like Doritos. (Call me awkward, but that sounds good...)
9) What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
It's cliché, but Be Yourself.  I spent too much time in several areas of my life trying to be someone I'm not.  This applies to writing; write what YOU enjoy, not what's selling or what your friend thinks you should write or what would make an awesome movie.  We're all different for a reason.  Embrace what makes you, you.
10) BOXERS OR BRIEFS?
Boxers, definitely.
11) Who inspires you and why?
My mom.  I've known her for 25 years and I still want to call her up every day and tell her everything.  She basically wins at parenting.  As I mentioned above, I don't have children yet, but I see so many train-wreck parents these days.  I may be weird in a funny way, but I'm otherwise stable and successful, and I attribute that to her raising me well.  I can only hope I'll be just as good so that my future children will still want to call me when they're 25. :)
12) RICH AND MISERABLE OR BROKE AND HAPPY?
Absolutely broke and happy.  Hubby and I have talked once or twice about what it would be like if we just left all our gadgets behind and started a simpler life, maybe traveling for months and just living off of what we have.  Of course we're only half-serious and ultimately we don't want to leave our jobs, but still... (Somebody has read too much of Walden)
13) Describe a triumphant moment in your quest to publish.
Triumphant... hmm... I can't say I've had all that much success, but even small successes count, right?  For me, triumph comes when I can move to the next level with my writing.  Beta readers help tremendously.  They help me see what I'm not able to, and oftentimes their perspectives inspire whole new angles for me to work with.  So, I consider myself successful when I keep going and keep learning, and with every new draft I create, I'm better than I was before.
14) SMELL LIKE FETA CHEESE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE OR WEAR A CHASTITY BELT UNTIL DEATH DO YOU PART?
My word, where do you come up with these things? :) Gosh, that's a hard one.  I'd say the chastity belt.  I'm really sensitive to smell and the cheese smell would really bother me.
15) What inspired you to seek publication? How did you get started? What made you begin writing?
I've been writing stories since I was about 6 or 7 and have always been passionate.  Time flies when I write.  I'd graduated college with a degree in Psychology, planning to become a counselor, before realizing that I didn't want to miss out on potentially doing what I love for a living.  So I buckled down and began writing my first novel and researching the publishing industry (unfortunately in that order.)
16) A WORD YOU HAVE TROUBLE SPELLING FOR NO REASON? (come on, everyone has got one)
I've got like 50.  Lately, I've been forgetting the second R in "embarrassing," which is kinda, well, embarrassing.  My big trouble word used to be "privilege." I always wanted to spell it "privelidge."  Also, "Pocahontas." (I can taste the irony in embarrassing)
17) Describe a low moment in your quest to publish and detail how you overcame it?
I think my lowest moments were toward the beginning of my writing journey, with my first and second novels.  I used to write romance and I wasn't as knowledgeable about the craft of writing.  I was just so glad to have my thoughts on paper in coherent sentences.  Then came the 30 rejections on the query I sent out too early, and I thought I was done with writing.  But then I got the idea to write middle grade fiction.  After all, I worked with 8-12 year olds for 3 years.  Getting inside their head was natural.  I'm now in the middle of my 4th MG novel and loving it more than writing romance.  I'm not ready query right now, but when I am, I'm going to step out into query-land with new confidence.  I hope.
18) YOU HAVE 7 WORDS TO SELL YOURSELF TO AN AGENT/PUBLISHER… GO!
Works hard and writes from the heart. (I like your style)
19) Why do you blog?
I blog for the relationships.  I love to connect with others, and not even in a self-promoting way, but just for a support system and online social group.  Writing can be a very solitary activity if you don't step out and socialize.
20) WHAT DOES SHENANIGANS MEAN TO YOU?
"Hey Farva, what's the name of that restaurant you like...?" For those of you who don't get the "Super Troopers" reference, I'll provide another answer.  Shenanigans is this very interview!  No, it really isn't, except maybe the cheese/chastity belt question.  That was total shenanigans. :)
I know you just loved my friend Shellsyyyyyy! So visit her sometime, she is a really great person! Stories in the Ordinary is just down the street and on your right.
